Order notification: Renewal of the backup system at Günter Kunststoffmaschinen GmbH

Initial situation:

The existing backup server hardware is technically outdated and no longer meets current standards in terms of energy efficiency, ease of management, and maintainability. While the existing NAS systems are fully operational, they are not yet integrated into the backup strategy in an optimal and efficient manner.
The objective of the project was to modernize the backup infrastructure, optimize the existing system landscape, and make the best possible use of available resources.

The solution:

A centralized data protection solution based on Veeam Backup & Replication was implemented.
SIGMA performed a detailed requirements analysis, evaluated various options, and selected the most suitable systems for the future. In addition to recommending a new backup server and a modern tape library, the entire backup concept was redesigned. This approach not only aligned the data protection environment with current requirements but also established a future-proof foundation to support ongoing growth.

The new backup server serves as the central component of the backup environment. It manages and controls all backup and restore processes as well as the administration of the repositories. The two existing NAS systems remain in use and are strategically integrated into the new design. The revised role distribution optimizes storage utilization: NAS 1 is used as a dedicated storage target for workstation and server backups, while NAS 2 functions as a staging and copy repository between disk and tape. For long-term data retention, a tape library is utilized and directly connected to the backup server via SAS. Long-term archiving based on the air-gap principle ensures physical separation of backup data from the network, significantly enhancing data security and integrity.

Through close collaboration with SIGMA, a high-performance and reliable solution was delivered that combines security, stability, and scalability. The company is now ideally positioned to manage and protect its data efficiently and securely over the long term.
